Power racks are the most straightforward major purchase in commercial strength equipment and the one where used buying makes the most obvious sense. There is no motor, no cable, no upholstery and nothing to calibrate — a rack is welded steel with a set of liners and pins. What varies is the specification: upright dimensions, steel thickness, hole spacing and diameter, the attachment ecosystem, and whether the whole thing has been squared and bolted down or dragged around a gym for a decade. Those details decide whether a rack is a lifetime asset or a wobbling frustration, and they also determine whether you can buy attachments for it in three years. Full racks, half racks, squat stands and rigs
A full power rack has four uprights and enclosed safety bars, which makes it the safest option for lifters training alone and the natural choice for a general-membership floor. It occupies the most space and needs clear access at the front, but it also does the most: squat, press, bench inside it, and pull up from the top bar.
Half racks use two main uprights with a supporting rear structure, giving open access for squatting out and taking up less depth. They suit facilities where lifters are competent and coached, and they often carry more attachments and plate storage on the rear. Squat stands are simpler still, cheap to buy used and easy to move, but they offer the least safety margin.
Rigs are multi-station structures, effectively several racks joined together with shared uprights. On the used market they are excellent value per station because sellers want the whole thing gone, but they are inflexible: you need the floor space and the ceiling height for the entire structure and you cannot easily use half of it.
Match the type to your members. If people train unsupervised at heavy loads, full racks with proper safeties are the responsible choice. If you run coached strength sessions or have limited depth, half racks give more layout freedom. Buying two half racks rather than one full rack is often the better use of a small floor.
Upright size, steel gauge and hole spacing
Upright dimensions are the headline specification. Commercial racks commonly use 75mm square uprights, while lighter-duty racks use 60mm. The larger section is stiffer and feels more solid under heavy load, and it also determines which attachments will fit — a 75mm rack will not take 60mm accessories and vice versa.
Steel thickness matters as much as the outside dimension. Two racks with identical 75mm uprights can have quite different wall thickness, and the thinner one will flex more and is more likely to deform around the holes over years of heavy J-cup use. If the specification is available for the model, check it; if not, the weight of the rack is a reasonable proxy.
Hole spacing and diameter determine adjustability and compatibility. Closer spacing in the bench and squat range lets lifters find the exact height they want, which is a real quality-of-life difference. Hole diameter affects which pins and attachments fit, and mixed standards are the main reason people end up unable to buy accessories for an older rack.
Check what safety system the rack uses. Pin-and-pipe safeties, flip-down safety bars and strap safeties all work, but they differ in how quickly they adjust and how much they punish a dropped bar. Straps are kinder to bars and floors; steel safeties are more robust and easier to keep track of. Whichever it is, the rack needs a complete, undamaged set.
Inspecting for damage that actually matters
Sight along every upright from top to bottom looking for bowing or bending. Uprights are usually damaged in one of two ways: repeated heavy loading on the safeties, or a rough dismantle and move. A visibly bent upright compromises the whole structure and is not something you should design a floor around.
Examine the holes closely, particularly in the bench press and squat range where J-cups sit. Ovalled, deformed or torn holes indicate years of heavy use with metal-on-metal J-cups and they will let attachments move under load. Some deformation is cosmetic; holes that have visibly opened up are a genuine concern.
Check the welds at the base, at every cross member and around any bolt plates. Cracked or hastily repaired welds are the most serious fault you can find on a rack, and given how many sound racks are available used there is no reason to take one on. Look for evidence of the frame having been forced back into shape.
Then check what is bolted on. J-cups should have intact plastic or UHMW liners, since bare metal cups chew both bars and uprights. Safeties should be straight and complete, pull-up bars secure and knurling serviceable, pins present and undamaged, and plate horns straight rather than drooping. Surface rust on steel is cosmetic; deep pitting on a bar-contact surface is not.
Footprint, ceiling height and bolting down
A full commercial rack typically occupies around 1.5m by 1.5m and stands 2.1 to 2.4m tall, though depth varies a lot with plate storage and attachments. The rack footprint is only the start: allow room to walk a bar out at the front, load plates at the sides, and use a bench inside or in front of it. In practice a rack station wants three metres of clear space in one direction.
Ceiling height needs checking against the rack height plus overhead use. Pressing overhead inside a rack and using the pull-up bar both need clearance above the frame, and low ceilings are the most common reason a rack has to be positioned somewhere less convenient. Measure to the lowest obstruction in the intended spot.
Bolting down is strongly preferred for commercial racks and essential for most half racks and rigs, which rely on floor fixing for stability when a bar is racked hard on one side. Confirm your floor construction and check the rack has undamaged base plates with usable holes — a rack whose base plates have been drilled several times in previous installations is worth a closer look.
Think about flooring under and around the rack. Heavy rubber matting or a lifting platform protects the substrate, reduces noise transmission and stops plates chipping the floor. It is much easier to lay before the rack goes in than to work around afterwards.
Maintenance and consumables
Racks need very little, but the little they need matters. Check the fixings periodically, particularly the base bolts and any bolted cross members, because repeated heavy loading loosens them and a rack that has developed movement will wear its holes faster.
Treat J-cup liners as consumables. Once a liner has worn through to bare metal, the cup starts marking bars and the upright, so replacing liners is cheap protection for expensive bars. Keep spare liners for the model if you can, and check the fit is correct rather than approximate.
Keep an eye on safeties and pins. Steel safeties take impact loads and will eventually bend; straps stretch and fray. Replace them when they show damage rather than waiting, because these are the components members trust when a lift fails.
For appearance, surface rust responds well to light abrasion and touch-up paint, and a heavily used rack can be stripped and powder coated to look new. That is worth planning if you are buying an older rack for a customer-facing floor, and it is far cheaper than the price difference between a scruffy rack and a pristine one.
Brands, attachment ecosystems and compatibility
The practical difference between rack brands is less about steel quality than about the attachment ecosystem. Buying into a system where the manufacturer still sells J-cups, safeties, dip bars and landmines for your upright size and hole pattern means you can extend the rack for years. Buying an orphan rack means making do with what came with it.

Many aftermarket accessories are made for common standards, so a rack using a widespread upright size and hole spacing is easier and cheaper to live with than an unusual one.

Lifespan, transport and inspection before you pay
A commercial rack in sound condition has an effectively unlimited working life. Nothing wears out except liners, pins and finish, which is why the used market is full of racks from gyms that have closed or rebranded rather than from racks that have failed. Judge on damage rather than age.
Refurbished racks usually mean a strip, powder coat and new liners and pins, which is largely cosmetic work but does produce a rack that looks new. As-seen racks are perfectly good if the uprights are straight, the holes are sound and the welds are clean, and they are where the value is.
Transport is manageable because racks dismantle.
